Scholar Industry Meeting: APS Solar Operation tour

Courtesy of General Manager Bradley Albert, on February 10th from 1-3pm more than 15 QESST Students, from ASU and UofA, visited the headquarters of the biggest utility company in Arizona. GM Albert gave a detailed explanation of how the energy portfolio works at state and SW region levels, and showed us the daily challenges the company faces in order to provide a constant flow of electricity at the best cost to all users. The percentage of renewable energy in the portfolio is of 10%, with a capacity of 840 MWs of solar. Resource management is key to achieving the low costs of electricity, considering the “duck curve” and the dependency of solar on uninterrupted irradiance, as well as varying demands of costumers.

QESST Scholars visited th largest utility in the state of Arizona, to learn about the state’s energy portfolio and how it is managed on the state and region level.

On the picture we see GM Bradley Albert, from APS, explaining how the energy production looked like from the different plants at that moment. This has to be monitored constantly and planned with detail to meet the customer demands at the best cost possible.
